Zoning Project

F ‘21

In collaboration with Naomi Kern

For our analytic model, we conducted an examination of the existing building on a site, in relation to the buildable area (as defined by current code) and the boundary of the property. We conceptualized these three areas as three-dimensional zones, and through our model, we explored how these boundaries interact— whether they overlap, contain one another, and so on. The plaster structures represents what is built but, by current code, is out of the boundary of the property. The acrylic box represents the property boundaries, and the strings create a pattern of buildable area within the property lines.

In order to map the buildable area, we delved into the specific requirements of R-3 properties in Providence, RI; we strictly followed the front, side, and rear setbacks, as well as the limits imposed on building surface coverage. Our 3-D mapping made evident the ways in which these two buildings in the West End do not abide by these regulations.
