F.U.E.L. BUS

SP ‘22
In collaboration with Megan Holzrichter
[FOOD USHERING EXERCISED LIFESTYLES]

This project aims to improve the mental and physical health of the young adolescents in South Side Providence, RI through a designed system dedicated to provide opportunities of physical activity and food access and knowledge when schools are not in session.

Currently, the network of resources for families experiencing food insecurity is quite limited in the area of Providence west of 1-95, primarily focusing on Broad St and Elmwood St. This project takes on an “urban accupuncture” approach by aiming to fill the gap in the existing network by running transversely through these major roads to really penetrate into the fabric of the South End. The project utilizes the vacant, abandoned, and deteriorated properties that are within walking distances from schools in these neighborhoods to be the site of intervention.

The FUEL Bus network consists of a dock and bus that is dedicated to provide opportunities of physical activity and food access/education when schools are not in session. The dock will be consistent and permanent on every site but the program inside will change dependent on the existing site conditions and the available opportunities for partnerships nearby.

Site 1: 235 Thurbers Ave
[The Performance Space]

Site 2: 176 Burnside St
[The Community Garden]

Due to the scope of the system and the available resources, buses will run on a schedule moving between sites. This means that not all docks will have a bus attached to it at all times. As seen in this example calendar there will be site specific programs that take place at the sites when the bus is at the dock. The days that there are no programs the space and the site will still be available and accessible for public use. Children will be able to use these sites for outdoor activities and other programs that are sponsored by nearby organizations.
