Modular Farmers Market Stand

SP ‘22

In collaboration with Megan Hotzritcher

In an effort to change the preconceptions of “perfect” food, we decided to create a project that works to achieve a mindset that accepts the natural lifespan of food and not waste based on aesthetic pre-conceptions on what is “fresh”.

We designed a farmer’s stand that sells produce at all different stages of its lifespan. The modular structure allows for easy set up and take down, and an opportunity for growth or shrinkage. Hanging between the walls are recipes for the produce at 4 different stages of life: unripe, ripe, overripe, and scraps.

As one walks through the structure from the larger opening to the smaller side, the recipes starts from unripe to scraps, operating on the same notion in our drawing that the percentage of waste gets closer to 1:1 but if one walks in from the smaller side, they are representing the chain at which the perception starts small and how it influences the entire production cycle. The backside of the recipes state quotes about food waste.

Our modular structure was created out of produce boxes that were saved from Stop & Shop to prevent waste for every aspect of the construction. We chose to follow the lifespan of blueberries, tomatoes, and cucumbers, produce that could all be grown in RI. In addition to accepting the ephemerality of life through our reused cardboard and produce, we also used a temporary method of attachment for the recipes. This way, customers and farmers could add and subtract from the range of recipes.
